The MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) is hosting an online Masterclass with global media company Paramount, on the topic of Adapting International Formats for Local Audiences, using the Love & Hip Hop SA reality TV series as a case study.

The Masterclass is open to film and TV professionals and aspiring filmmakers, and will be presented by executive producer Lindiwe Magubane, director and content strategist Mohube Rapodile and producer, writer, and director Vuyisa Xaba.

MTF Masterclasses are “Best in Class” workshops facilitated by industry experts and open to industry professionals. The Masterclasses aim to develop the technical skills of industry creatives in various production disciplines to improve the quality of local productions.

Love & Hip Hop is an international media franchise that began as a reality TV series in the US and expanded across the world. The show is a property of Paramount, which produces content for an audience of billions across the world. Love & Hip Hop: South Africa premiered on MTV Africa this year. The show documents the personal and professional lives of hip hop and R&B musicians, performers, managers, and record producers.

Since launching in January 2019, the MTF Masterclasses have enjoyed the support of international industry partners including the New York Film Academy, Canon and now Paramount. Last year’s MTF masterclasses attracted almost 3 500 attendees and featured facilitators who are industry leaders and winners of SAFTA Awards, AMVCA Awards, and even Academy Awards.

“It is an established industry trend for international shows to be adapted for African audiences,” says MTF Director Nwabisa Matyumza. “The Real Housewives, Survivor, Idols, and Big Brother have all been adapted with great results, and Love & Hip Hop is the latest adaptation. Learning how to localise a global show is now an invaluable skill that can help industry professionals improve their marketability in the industry. This is the knowledge that we will be sharing at the next Masterclass.”

The Adapting International Format for Local Content Masterclass takes place on 6 July 2023, from 6pm CAT, 5pm WAT and 7pm EAT. Participants can register here or at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Tk3WaYRRSiKwxSl2m8-9ww.

The MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) is a shared-value initiative that provides a platform for the creative industries to develop their talent and engage through their shared passions. This initiative has a multi-tiered approach, namely the MTF Portal, the MTF Academies and MTF Industry Masterclasses.
